International Golf at Cardigan
This year’s Wales v Ireland golf international at Boys level was held at Cardigan Golf Club on the 29th and 30th of March.
The inaugural match at this level was held at Cardigan in 1996 when the Club presented a cup, called the Cardigan Cup, to be played annually.
Played in wet and windy conditions, the Irish team won the Monday morning foursomes by four games to nil.
Monday afternoon brought no respite with the weather and the Irish team again had the upper hand, winning the singles by 4½ to 3½.
Monday’s results left the young Welsh team with an uphill task in Tuesday’s singles, and again the Irish prevailed, winning by 5 matches to 3 and therefore reclaiming the Cardigan Cup by 13½ points to 6½ points.
At the presentation, officials from both Ireland and Wales congratulated both teams on their standard of play, commitment and concentration in such poor weather conditions, and also the Cardigan Club on the usual warm and friendly welcome.
They complimented the Club on the condition of the course and its ability to remain playable in such wet weather when most other courses would be closed.
We hope to welcome the match back in 2012.
